Favorite Natural Toothpastes
For a while, my teeth would hurt when I brushed and flossed them (yes, I floss. Twice a day). I couldn’t figure out why because I thought I was doing everything right. My teeth were just so sensitive and it only got worse over time. I had some gum decay and turns out both the way I brushed my teeth and the toothpaste I used were making things worse. I always bought the cheapest toothpaste possible without checking to see if anything in it could make my problem worse.
Luckily, my dentist had some good advice. She told me to get a softer toothbrush, not brush my teeth as hard, and switch to a toothpaste for folks with sensitivity. As I went around trying new kinds of toothpaste, I discovered that I liked the natural toothpastes the best. They did not have a ton of harsh ingredients, they tasted better, and most importantly, my teeth didn’t hurt when I used them. I am not particularly attached to one brand more than another. However, I am going to give you some of my personal favorites:
Toms of Maine The favorite of grocery stores and hipsters everywhere, Tom’s of Maine is one of the most affordable natural toothpaste and most effective at whitening teeth. Their toothpastes contain glycerin, peppermint oil, and zinc citrate which are all found either in the human body or in plants, allowing folks to have clean teeth without the fluoride.
Schmidt's activated charcoal toothpaste in particular is one of the most effective natural toothpastes for overall deep cleaning. The activated charcoal, aloe leaf juice, magnolia bark extract, and vitamin E all combine to give you a great toothpaste that does not stain your sink countertop or taste awful.
Dr. Bronner Vegan and cruelty-free, this toothpaste is a great option for those who have a little extra change in their pocket for toothpaste. Baking-soda-based, this toothpaste has ingredients in it like coconut oil and stevia that make up about 70% of the ingredients. One of the best organic options out there.
Desert Essence This one is one of my favorites because of its taste. Their aloe vera & tea tree oil flavored toothpaste tastes amazing and I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way about a toothpaste before. I’m currently using it and I swallowed some by accident the other night. And I did. Not. Care. That’s how good it is.
LeBon This one is also a recommendation for those who are willing to pay a pretty penny for their toothpaste. It is made from green tea and xylitol so you’ll feel like you’re drinking really nice gum. It also comes in eco-friendly and recyclable packaging so you can have your toothpaste and not pollute the ocean.
Make your own Bet you didn’t see this one coming! That’s right! You can make your own toothpaste from any of the ingredients that you can find in store-brand natural toothpaste thanks to the miracle of the Internet. Do lots of research, go to your local organic pharmacy, buy these ingredients, and get to work!
