Rhodium Plated Jewelry: The Facts

Unless you’re really into high-end jewelry, you’ve probably never heard of rhodium before. But did you know that it’s probably all over silver and platinum jewelry? It is put on silver or platinum jewelry in the form of a coating. This gives the base metal an extra layer of protection from scratches and lots of extra shine. How does it achieve that luster, you might ask? Let me explain. And yes, there’s some science involved.

Let’s start with the basics. Rhodium is a precious metal found in nature. Like gold, silver, and platinum, it’s extremely rare and highly sought after. Rhodium is mined and then it is electroplated onto jewelry and other surface metals. Electroplating is when electrical currents are applied to a base metal to make it conduct electricity in conjunction with another metal like rhodium, silver, or chromium (hopefully not chromium because it causes cancer!)

Rhodium is formed the same way gems do.There are crystals that form because of magma and they combine together to make the metal. In addition, rhodium is in high demand as a coating metal because of it’s resistance to corrosion. Rhodium has a high amount of acid-base properties that make it harder for oxygen to make the metal rust. This makes it perfect for coating those silver and platinum rings, necklaces, and bracelets we love.

Rhodium plated jewelry is a very good investment for folks with fine statement pieces. It will keep your jewelry looking new. It is non-toxic, completely hypoallergenic, and will not leave nasty green marks on your skin. As someone who has had the green marks show up because of toxic metals, you do not want that happening! It will seriously irritate your skin! It will also make your jewelry resistant to tarnish, rust, and scratches. The only downside is it is very high-maintenance. You will need to get it replaced annually and each time it will cost you $40-100. But if you’re willing to put up with the maintenance, choose rhodium! Your pieces will thank you later!
