Your Toothpaste Might Be Your Enemy

Why should you have to look at your toothpaste label when it's supposed to be the health product for your teeth? Surprisingly, most toothpaste contain unnecessary ingredients which can be very harmful to your organs and internal health.

Here is the list of all ingredients you would want to avoid in your toothpaste

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate is used as a foaming agent and can cause irritation and organ toxicity. It can also aggravate aphthous ulcers in your mouth.

  • Titanium dioxide is used as a whitening enhancer but can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. The Titanium dioxide is able to penetrate into the gums and cause toxic reactions in your brain.

  • Fluoride is used to prevent cavities, treat plaque, and treat a mild form of gum disease. Sounds awesome right? Well… sorry to burst your bubble, but too much fluoride can actually cause discolored spots in your teeth.

  • Trisclosan is used to reduce or prevent bacterial contamination. But it also decreases some thyroid hormones that controls the metabolism and causes antibiotic resistance. (If you wonder why your metabolism may not be the way it used to be in high school then this could be one of the reasons why.)

  • Propylene glycol is used to improve shelf life but can damage the central nervous system, liver and heart.

  • Artificial sweeteners are just used for flavor which have no health benefits what so ever to your oral health. They actually can affect your gut bacteria, increase your blood glucose and is linked to insulin resistance.

  • Diethanolamine also known as DEA is not only found is certain generic toothpaste brands but also is found in antifreeze and brake fluid. Why in the world would I want to use something found in antifreeze and brake fluid in my mouth?! 😱 That's pretty crazy if you ask me… It's only used to create foam in toothpaste. In 1998 there was a study that linked DEA to cancer in animals and induced hepatic choline deficiency also known as a liver deficiency.

  • Last but not least Parabens are also used to preserve shelf life of toothpaste. It also disrupts hormone function by mimicking estrogen. Studies have shown it may lead to breast cancer and may be linked to development and reproductive issues.

Yikes! These disturbing ingredients can be found in most toothpaste. If you would like a natural safe alternative look for products that are free from the ingredients mentioned above or read my next blog on How To Make Your Own Toothpaste At Home!
